Minocqua Public Library Has Eliminated Daily Overdue Fines

Minocqua Public Library has joined the growing number of libraries in Wisconsin and across the United States that have eliminated daily overdue fines on library materials.

Quick Summary

What’s Changing

  • No daily overdue fines for late library materials.
  • Items returned late will still show as overdue.

What’s Staying the Same

  • Materials will still have due dates.
  • Cardholders are responsible for lost or damaged item costs.

What This Policy Means

Library materials will continue to have due dates, and cardholders are encouraged to return items on time or renew them if necessary. Items returned late will still be marked as overdue, but cardholders will no longer be charged daily overdue fines.

Important: This change applies only to daily overdue fines. Minocqua Public Library cardholders are still responsible for replacement costs for items that are lost or damaged.

Why the Change?

Research indicates that late fines do not significantly impact return rates and disproportionately affect low-income residents and families with children. Rather than encouraging timely returns, fines can discourage community members from using the library altogether.

What About Existing Fines on My Account?

As part of this change, most existing fines on accounts will be cleared. However, any outstanding charges for lost or damaged items will remain the responsibility of the cardholder.

If lost items are returned in good condition, the associated charges will be waived.
